Fly fishing for atlantic cod is a thrilling and rewarding experience that can be enjoyed in many countries around the world: from the United States and Canada to Europe. In the US, some of the best places to catch atlantic cod on a fly include the Gulf of Maine, Cape Cod, and the waters off New York and New Jersey. In Canada, the Atlantic provinces are home to some of the best fly fishing for cod, with hotspots including the Bay of Fundy and the Gaspé Peninsula. In Europe, Norway and Iceland are among the top destinations.
When it comes to flies, atlantic cod are opportunistic feeders that will eat a wide variety of food. Some of the most used flies include Clouser Minnows, Deceiver patterns, and crab and shrimp patterns. These flies mimic the natural prey of atlantic cod and can be effective in both shallow and deep water.
When it comes to technique, fly fishing for atlantic cod requires a patient and methodical approach. Atlantic cod are often found in deep water and can be challenging to catch, so it's important to use the right gear and to have a good understanding of their behavior. A fast-sinking fly line with a weighted fly is typically the best setup for targeting atlantic cod, and a long, slow strip can be effective in triggering a bite.
