Mid Norway offers a treasure trove of saltwater fly fishing opportunities. Exploring this picturesque region by bellyboat allows you to access even more prime fishing spots. With the breathtaking "flying door" sea-eagle soaring above, fly fishing in the land of the midnight sun is an experience you'll never forget.
Thanks to the numerous islands, fjords, and bridges dotting the landscape, finding a sheltered spot to fish, regardless of wind conditions, is never a challenge. Here are some of the top fish species you can target on your Mid Norway saltwater fly fishing adventure.
The Pollack (Pollachius pollachius) is a top choice for fly fishing enthusiasts in Mid Norway. Known for their large dark eyes and big mouths, these hard-hitting, deep-diving fighters provide a thrilling challenge. Depending on the weather and season, you can find Pollack at various depths, from the surface to the depths below. Floating lines are useful, but sinking lines (DI 3, 5, or even 7) are often the better choice. The prime time to target Pollack is from June to September, with June being a particular favorite due to the extended daylight hours.
While Pollack may be elusive in early June, Atlantic cod are often abundant after their spawning season. If you're at the right place at the right time, you can find these hungry giants eagerly taking big flies. Be prepared for some unusual battles as these cods attempt to entangle themselves in your leader. The sight of their white bellies and distinct spots as they approach your bellyboat in the crystal-clear water is nothing short of spectacular.
Coalfish are a constant presence in Mid Norway, often found in massive shoals of smaller fish. On lucky days, you may encounter larger specimens, although the truly colossal ones (1 meter and above) typically require venturing further out to sea on a boat. The "smaller" Coalfish provide an exciting challenge on a lighter rod when fishing from a bellyboat.
Mid Norway's diverse ecosystem also offers the chance to encounter other species such as Atlantic mackerel, sea trout, and, if fortune favors you, even smaller Atlantic halibut.
Embark on a saltwater fly fishing adventure in Mid Norway and experience the thrill of battling these magnificent fish amidst the region's awe-inspiring landscapes.
In short: the summer months are the best months. When it's mid-summer, surface fly fishing can be done… great fun!
