Located on the central western coastline of North Island in New Zealand, the Taranaki region presents an exceptional fly fishing environment teeming with trout. With a network of over 40 small to mid-sized streams and rivers, all originating from the rich ecosystem of Egmont National Park, the region is an angler's delight.
Besides the Egmont National Park, numerous other rivers in Taranaki have their sources in the Tongariro National Park. This adds to the diversity and abundance of fishing spots in the region.
The rivers and streams of Taranaki provide a fantastic opportunity for sight fishing. Here, both brown and rainbow trout abound, although the former species is seen in greater numbers. The average weight of the trout in Taranaki hovers around 1.5 kilograms, with many larger specimens tipping the scales at up to 4.5 kilograms.
Fishing in Taranaki is about more than just the catch. It’s a fully immersive experience set against a breathtaking backdrop of native trees, verdant pastures, and abundant birdlife. The majestic, cone-shaped Mount Taranaki enhances this picturesque setting, contributing to a memorable day out in nature.
Compared to many other regions in New Zealand, Taranaki doesn't see as much fishing activity. This lower angling pressure results in fish that are less wary and, consequently, easier to hook. This makes Taranaki an ideal destination for both seasoned anglers and those new to the sport.
