Bunny Leech Fly

Bunny Leech

Versatile streamer, imitates prey items, rabbit fur body, enticing movement, adaptable.

How it's tied

The Bunny Leech is tied using a standard streamer hook, ranging from sizes 2 to 10, depending on the target species. Smaller hooks are used for bass and other smaller predatory fish, while the larger hooks are used for bigger fish like pike. The tail and body are made from strips of rabbit fur, also known as "zonker" strips. These strips are cut from a rabbit pelt and have a natural taper that creates a lifelike swimming motion in the water. For the body, the zonker strip is palmered around the hook shank, while the tail is tied in at the hook bend. A thread head is created at the hook eye, and additional materials such as flash or a bead head can be added for extra attraction. Some have an additional hook in the back of the zonker strip.

What it mimics

The Bunny Leech is a versatile streamer pattern designed to imitate various aquatic prey, such as leeches, baitfish, and crayfish. Its lifelike motion in the water and the undulating action of the rabbit fur make it an enticing offering for a wide range of fish species. The fly can be tied in various colors and sizes to match the specific prey items present in the fishing environment.

Where it's used

The bunny leech is used to fly fish for multiple fish species such as trout, bass, pike, and even saltwater species like redfish and tarpon. The fly can be fished using various techniques, such as dead drifting, swinging, or stripping, depending on the desired presentation and the target species' feeding behavior.
