This beautiful island in the Baltic Sea is a fly fisher's paradise, offering abundant opportunities to catch perch and seatrout amidst stunning landscapes. From late summer to spring, each season presents its unique challenges and rewards. Prepare to be captivated by Gotland's diverse fly fishing experiences.
Big thanks to our fly fishing member Robin from Sweden that has provided the description and some pictures!
As late summer turns to early autumn, the harbors of Gotland teem with perch venturing in from the Baltic Sea to feast on Herring. During this feeding frenzy, casting a baitfish imitation can result in thrilling bites. Get ready for an adrenaline-pumping experience as you watch the fish relentlessly attack your fly.
In mid to late autumn, Perch migrate into streams and smaller rivers, continuing their search for smaller baitfish and fry. Enjoy picturesque fishing experiences in natural settings, casting baitfish imitations to tempt the hungry fish. Remember, fishing in these streams and rivers requires a license or fishing card, which can be obtained from iFiske.se.
As the chill of winter recedes, warming waters stir the perch to life. Spring presents a unique opportunity to catch perch using a variety of flies, from size 14 nymphs to huge pike flies. Witness the renewed energy of the fish as they become active once more.
Seatrout fishing is Gotland's claim to fame, with 80 kilometers of coastline providing ideal habitats for these prized fish. The island's long, slender shape makes it easy to find optimal fishing conditions, with most locations accessible within a 30-60 minute drive.
Autumn seatrout fishing in Gotland is both challenging and immensely rewarding. The fish journey from the open Baltic Sea to the island's shorelines before continuing up the streams and smaller rivers to spawn. Capitalize on this migration by casting wooly buggers, shrimp, and baitfish imitations to entice these elusive fish.
Winter is prime time for fly fishing seatrout in Gotland. The fish remain close to the shorelines throughout the day, sometimes swimming in water as shallow as 30 centimeters. Focus on casting near rocks and seafloor vegetation, where seatrout feed on small gammarus and shrimp. Winter offers the best chance to land a trophy seatrout on a fly rod!
Spring seatrout fishing in Gotland is unpredictable and varied, as the fish may feed on anything from gammarus to ragworms. This season tests your skills, thinking, and mentality as an angler to the max. Embrace the challenge and enjoy the thrill of outsmarting these wily fish.
As you've read above: fly fishing is really good almost all year round. It does depend on which species you're targeting though, so come with a plan and the fishing will be good!
