Wading
5th of July 2022
Wading boots are essential for fly fishers who want to get closer to the fish. Here at FlyFish Circle, we know that you need a sturdy pair of boots to keep your feet dry and your toes un-squelched. Luckily, there are a lot of options when it comes to wading boots. No matter what type of fishing you like to do, there is something out there for you! But what if you’re not sure which one or which wading boots size will be right for you? How can you know which will keep your toes warm and dry or which ones won’t squish your toes? Let’s take a look at some helpful tips.
This should be your first step in the process. Reviews can give you a better idea of the pros and cons of a certain brand or style. If you know someone who fishes with wading boots, ask them how they like them and if they have any complaints. This way, you will know what to expect from a particular brand, and what the things are that you should pay attention to when assessing potential new wading boots.
This is especially important if you’re trying waders for the first time. There are a lot of different materials, designs, and styles to choose from. No one boot is right for everyone or every situation. Some are better for wintery conditions, and others are better for summer days. A good shop will let you try a few on before you buy. This way, you’ll know which fit your foot best and which feel most comfortable. Don't feel to urge to buy on the first visit. Sleep on it for few nights and come back to try the ones you like again.
The most asked question! The answer unfortunately is: it depends on the brand... Some recommend buying half a size or a full size bigger than your regular shoes. But some recommend buying your regular shoe size. So: check what is recommended and look at the size chart of the specific brand you're looking into. As is indicated in this article: of course the most important thing is to try before you buy.
The boot’s fit is important when you’re wading through thick grass or weeds. You don’t want your waders to get stuck on anything or get your wading boots slipping off with all the bending and pushing through the water. If you’re wearing wading boots, you will want them to be a comfortable but secure fit. If your feet can slide around in them, it's not a good fit.
Each brand has its own style of wading boot, and each style might fit a bit differently. If you’re not sure which brand to go with, try on different brands to see which one feels the most comfortable. Some brands might fit your foot better than others. This is true even within the same brand.
If you're planning on wet wading you won't need waders of course. But if you do: make sure to try on your wading shoes with your waders on if you have stockingfoot waders. The layer of neoprene is thick and influences what size wading boots you need. If you already have waders and are only buying the boots: bring your waders to the store to try.
The main difference between men’s and women’s wading boots is in width. Getting men’s boots was recommended way back in the day if you were a woman but still wanted quality boots. However, times have changed. Other than shape and fit, women’s boots now have the same quality, materials, and manufacturing.
Finding the right size for your wading boots is important! The wrong size can lead to blisters and soggy, squished toes. You want to make sure your boots are comfortable and snug but not too tight. If there's one thing that you take away from this article, it should be: try (extensively!) before you buy.
