A note from FlyFish Circle: we are independent. We do not post paid reviews, or reviews of gear where we get the gear for free or for a discount. However, like this article, everyone is welcome to write about their gear, tools or other fly fishing equipment and share it with the fly fishing community here.
Maarten, a passionate fly fisher from Wilnis, began his journey in fly fishing at the age of 15. His expertise spans across fishing for pike in Holland to trout fishing in various European locations. His multifaceted interests in photography and toolmaking have led to the creation of a unique set of wing burners, extended body pins, and a unique sightplate. These tools are designed for making highly realistic wings for artificial flies, demonstrating his love for fly fishing, keen eye for photography, and precision toolmaking skills.
Maarten's method for creating fly wings, initiated in 2012, employs common materials like packaging foam, cling film, and stretch film. These materials, primarily polyethylene, can be combined or used separately to produce various textures and effects. The process includes coloring, heating, and laminating the materials, with special attention to maintaining the cling film's glossy effect.
His range includes over 40 wingburners (mayflies, stoneflies, midges etc.) and for caddis flies there is an expanded series of 5 regular wing burners, a series of 3 for extra narrow small wings, and a set of 7 for single wings made from feathers, catering to a wide range of fly tying needs.
Maarten further refined his wing-making technique by experimenting with foils and decals for inkjet and laser printers. He opted for a thin film from AC-Concept, ideal for crafting waterproof and photorealistic wings. This method requires detailed steps like printing, removing the adhesive back with white spirit, and protecting the printed film with cling film. These techniques enable the creation of wings with remarkable detail and realism.
Maarten's wing burners are notable for their ease of use, allowing for precise cutting and shaping without manual clamping. Constructed from stainless steel, they demonstrate his toolmaking prowess. Each set is accompanied by digital files for decal printing, enabling fly fishers to produce wings that closely mimic nature. The range of wing burners, alongside his extended body pins and sightplate, offer versatility and precision in fly tying.
Maarten offers comprehensive guidance on using the wing burners effectively. His advice includes managing heat to prevent burner overheating and ensuring clean cuts for realistic wings. He also suggests using alternative materials like organza and poly yarn, providing options for different textures and appearances in fly tying.
In his continuous quest for innovation, Maarten discovered the suitability of PLA films for crafting small, detailed wings. These bio-degradable films, derived from plant starch, exemplify his commitment to environmentally sustainable practices in fly tying.
Maarten advises fly fishers to utilize local reproshops or copyshops for high-quality, waterproof decal prints. This approach ensures durable and realistic wings for fly tying, leveraging the full potential of his wing burners, extended body pins, and unique sightplate.
In summary, Maarten's comprehensive toolkit, including handmade wing burners, extended body pins, and a unique sightplate, offers a groundbreaking approach to fly tying. These tools blend craftsmanship, innovation, and eco-consciousness, opening new possibilities for fly fishers aiming to enhance their fly tying artistry.
