A false cast is a casting technique in which the angler keeps the line airborne without letting it touch the water. False casts are used to lengthen or shorten the amount of line out, change the direction of the cast, or to dry off a waterlogged fly. Excessive false casting, however, can spook fish and increase the likelihood of tangles.
