Catch and Release

Catch and Release

The practice of putting the fish back in the water alive after catching it, sometimes abbreviated to CR. The opposite is often referred to as 'catch and kill' or CK.

When practicing Catch and Release, make sure that you:

  • Handle the fish with care (touch it as less as possible)
  • Use a proper landing net with a rubber mesh
  • Unhook it in the water quickly
  • When releasing, hold it gently by the tail in the water in its natural swimming position. This way the fish can gain strength and it will swim off once it has recovered.
