A barbed hook is a hook that has a barb close to the point of the hook. The barb points in the opposite direction of the point of the hook.
Fishing with a barbed hook means you have less chance of loosing a fish, because the barb ensures that the hook will stay in. This also means that it's more difficult to remove the hook from the fish, and will more likely to cause damage to the fish.
