In the summer the fly fishing here can be very rewarding. When the Fint are there it's easy to loose count on how many you caught. And the moment you hook that seabass, whether small or large, the Maasvlake will be quickly added to your list of favorite spots.
The Maasvlakte is an artificially created extension of the Rotterdam Europort harbor. With stretches of sandy beaches, as well as kilometers of big rock and builder quay, it's the perfect habitate for sea bass (more info on Wikipedia).
In the summer months when the water temperature rises, fish head into the inner parts of the Maasvlakte. But it's doable to fish into the colder months as well. The primary fly fishing here is for sea bass, and it's fantastic. It does take some perseverance, and on some days it can be really tough, but once you hook one you're hooked for life. They put on an amazing fight and are a beautiful fish as well.
Next to sea bass there are a few specific spots that are fantastic for fint (which could be described as an 'oversized herring').
And if you're really, really lucky, you might even catch a sea trout here. But if that's the primary fish you're going for, you're better off in Scandinavia.
The fly fishing here can be considered pretty lightweight. All you need is some streamers and saltwater baitfish patterns, a stripping basked and an aftma 6 to 9 weight rod.
Fishing is best in the summer, with July and August often being the best months. There are people that fish here year round, but it's not for the faint hearted.
The area is very large, and it's recommended to go by car so you can (dis)cover lots of spots. As you can see from the pictures: sometimes a rope is handy to help you climb down, but there are plenty of spots where you don't need that. Make sure that you don't forget about the tide, and never fish alone in this area. The big boulders and rocks can be slippery, and you don't want to be alone if something happens.
